Chuck Schumer Is Having 940-Page “Big Beautiful Bill” Read Aloud by Senate Clerks Despite Objecting to the Procedure in 2021

The top Democrat in the Senate wants to make things as difficult as possible for Senate Republicans as they try to pass President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.” He plans to do this before lawmakers even get a chance to discuss the huge piece of legislation.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, plans to make Senate clerks read all 940 pages of the Republican bill out loud on the Senate floor. He is doing this to slow things down as much as he can. This will happen after Republicans vote on an important step to start debating the bill.

“I will object to Republicans moving forward on their Big, Ugly Bill without reading it on the Senate floor,” Schumer said on X. “Republicans won’t tell America what’s in the bill. So Democrats are forcing it to be read start to finish on the floor

“We will be here all night if that’s what it takes to read it.”

Staff members were seen bringing the bill onto the Senate floor, getting ready for the all-night reading session. Schumer’s plan could take as long as 15 hours. He wants to give Senate Democrats more time to look over all the different parts of the huge bill.

In the end, though, this move will only slow things down for a while. Senate Republicans will still keep working to have a final vote. After the bill is read, there will be 20 hours of debate. This time will be split evenly between Democrats and Republicans and will probably start early Sunday morning.

Democrats will likely use all of their 10 hours, but Republicans are expected to use less than their full time. After that, there will be a “vote-a-rama.” This is when lawmakers can suggest as many changes, or amendments, to the bill as they want.

During this process, Democrats will try to make things as tough as possible for Republicans again. Meanwhile, some Republican senators who have problems with parts of the bill, such as Medicaid and land sales, will try to change those sections.

The last time Senate clerks had to read an entire bill during the budget reconciliation process was in 2021, when Democrats were in control of the Senate. Back then, Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, made clerks read the whole American Rescue Act, which was over 600 pages long. Schumer, who was Senate Majority Leader at the time and trying to pass President Joe Biden’s agenda, did not want the bill to be read aloud.

The Biggest Threat to Your Retirement Is Actually a Very Good Thing

Longevity

When you look at the headlines today, you’ll see experts in the retirement industry warning about big threats to your financial security:

  • De-dollarization and the rise of BRICS
  • Soaring national debt
  • Unstable interest rates
  • Weakened U.S. dollar

All of these are real concerns. But they aren’t the biggest threat to your retirement savings. The true risk isn’t political, monetary, or global.

It’s longevity.

Why Longevity Is the Silent Threat

For most of human history, the problem was the opposite — life expectancy was short, and few people even reached retirement. Today, thanks to medical advancements, healthier lifestyles, and better living conditions, people are living longer than ever before.

And while that’s a wonderful thing, it comes with a financial catch: Your retirement account has to last far longer than you might expect.

  • A 65-year-old couple today has a 50% chance that one of them will live to 90.
  • Some projections suggest that many of us will live well into our 90s, even 100+.
  • This means your nest egg may need to stretch not for 15 years, but 25, 30, or even 40 years.

That’s where the real danger lies: running out of money before you run out of life.

The Retirement Equation Has Changed

While market volatility, debt crises, or central bank policies may feel like the scariest threats, they’re temporary storms. Longevity, however, is a structural shift. Every extra year of life is another year of expenses, another year of inflation erosion, and another year of financial pressure.

If your retirement plan doesn’t account for longevity, you could face tough choices later in life — downsizing, working when you’d rather not, or becoming financially dependent on others.

How to Take Control

The good news? Longevity is a blessing — as long as you’re prepared for it. With the right planning, your retirement savings can work for you instead of against you. The key is learning how to protect your wealth, outpace inflation, and ensure your savings grow even as you live longer.
